Best Dog Friendly Pubs - Close To Home

Travelling with a furry friend has never been easier or more enjoyable now there are so many pup-friendly options around Edinburgh.  Enjoy a walk together to these nearby locations for a good atmosphere, tasty menu options and plenty of drinks on offer.

Still, want to go further? Try these options further afield here. Or looking for somewhere close by? Try our neighbourhood picks here.

The Royal Dick

This local favourite is set in a former animal hospital featuring drinks and bar bites amid artwork and veterinary artefacts, a fitting locale for a dog-friendly outing.  They also have a decent size courtyard away from traffic noise.  Enjoy a walk-in in the Meadows en route from Haymarket Hotel.

Holyrood 9A

Real ales, craft beers and local characters abound in this stylish, relaxed, wood-panelled pub located in Edinburgh's historic old town.  Serving a vast variety of monster-sized burgers, a selection of other options and fantastic desserts (yes please Jammy Dodger sundae!)

Top Tip: Try not to be overwhelmed by the huge selection of tap beers.  The staff are happy to let you sample before you commit to one but be warned! Some of them are +5% alcohol.

The Doghouse

Self-described as 'a sanctuary for the weird and wonderful, a place where misfits fit'.  A stop here feels like taking a tumble down Alices' rabbit hole.  Curious decor, unique pub grub and creative cocktails abound. Live music and dogs are very welcome.

Halfway House

This award-winning tiny pub has a huge personality.  Find this hidden gem 'halfway' up Fleashmarket Close, close to Market Street. A visit here feels like stepping back in time into living history.  You will find locals, street performers, tourists, and everyone enjoying a friendly dram together.  They also serve tasty Scottish fare, including haggis, neeps and tatties that are worthy of mention.

Greyfriars Bobby

Of course, it wouldn't do to not include a pub which takes its name from Edinburgh's most famous dog, Greyfriars Bobby.  As legend has it, Bobby was a scruffy Skye terrier who faithfully watched over his owner’s grave for 14 years until he was buried alongside him in 1872.   Enjoy meeting Bobby (the statue) outside before heading into this famous bar.  On a sunny day, sitting out watching the world pass by is a time-honoured tradition of which I feel Bobby would be proud.

Edinburgh City buses and trams are both dog friendly (dogs on leads at the driver’s discretion) so enjoy adventuring around this fabulous city, named the UK's most dog-friendly tourist destination for 2021 (according to dog food company tails.com), armed with the knowledge of a safe, fast, lazy way home to The Haymarket Hotel at the end of the day.
