Starting your journey from the historic Haymarket Hotel puts you in the perfect spot to explore Edinburgh's free attractions and secret spots. Let's discover some amazing places that won't cost you a penny!

St. Mary's Cathedral

Walking Through History Just an 8-minute stroll from your hotel, you'll find the stunning St. Mary's Cathedral with its spires reaching into the sky. This Gothic masterpiece makes for incredible photos, especially during sunrise or sunset when the light hits the sandstone walls. Best of all? It's completely free to visit and explore inside.

The Royal Mile's Hidden Closes

Head east from Haymarket to discover the famous Royal Mile's mysterious alleyways called "closes." These narrow passages hold centuries of stories. White Horse Close is a photographer's dream with its old-world charm and curved staircases. Adventure down any and all closes on the Royal Mile and get a real feel for ancient Edinburgh.

Dunbar's Close Garden

Secret Gardens Did you know there's a hidden garden right in the city centre? The Dunbar's Close Garden feels like stepping into a secret world. It's designed to look like a 17th-century garden, with neat hedges and peaceful benches. Pack a sandwich and enjoy a free picnic surrounded by history.

Water of Leith

Water of Leith Walkway Just north of your hotel, you can join the Water of Leith Walkway. This beautiful riverside path is one of Edinburgh's best-kept secrets. Watch for herons fishing in the water and look out for the famous "chain bridge." The path takes you through Dean Village, a picture-perfect area that looks like it's frozen in time. Follow the path through Stockbridge and all the way to Leith to explore those areas of the city, then catch the tram home.

National Galleries of Scotland

A short walk from Haymarket brings you to the National Galleries of Scotland. These world-class museums are completely free! The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art has amazing outdoor sculptures, perfect for unique photos. Inside, you can see works by famous artists without spending anything.

The National Portrait Gallery on Queen Street has portraits of Scotts throughout history all housed in a fabulous neo-gothic building that is worth seeing.

  • Look for the "Witches' Well" near the Castle - it's easy to miss but tells an important story about Edinburgh's history

  • Check out the Grassmarket area for street performers and amazing castle views without the crowds

  • Listen to the bagpipe players near the castle for free

Festival Fun

If you're visiting during August, many Edinburgh Fringe Festival shows offer free previews. The Royal Mile becomes packed with street performers, making it perfect for people-watching and entertainment without spending money.  Likewise on the Cowgate listen out for callers shouting "free show, starting now" and join a free show.  They will pass a bucket around at the end and you can pay what you can/like for the show.

Tips

Remember to bring your camera and comfortable walking shoes - Edinburgh's attractions often involve some hill walking, but the views and memories are worth the effort. From your base at The Haymarket Hotel, you're perfectly placed to explore all these hidden gems while keeping your wallet happy!

Edinburgh's weather can change quickly, so even on sunny days, pack a light rain jacket. Some of the best photos happen when storm clouds roll over the castle and the haar settles on the cobblestones.  Take advantage of the pubs and cafes that prove a warm and welcoming site when the heavens open and we hope that no matter the weather, you enjoy your stay!
