Harry Potter’s Magical Edinburgh

Itinerary for Muggles, Witches and Wizards

As you have clicked on this article, I may strongly infer you want to experience Edinburgh with the same enchantment as JK Rowling intended. If so, be prepared for the best muggles guide to expose you to the world of magic.

The Elephant House

This little gem is where all it began…

As you may or may not be aware, Scotland is renowned for its brisk weather (which explains why whisky is a household staple, although I digress). A comforting warm beverage to escape the crisp outdoors and having a view of Edinburgh Castle was a recipe for success for JK Rowling. This is the birthplace of the Harry Potter novels we still adore to this day.

If you view the direct website below for The Elephant House, you can view an interview from Rowling herself in the café explaining her first two Harry Potter novels.

Sadly the original Elephant House has been damaged by fire and is closed to the public. However, if you head to Victoria Street, you’ll be able to sip on your coffee in an equally beautiful location (pictured).

Greyfriars Kirkyard

I can appreciate grave hunting sounds like quite a morbid activity. Although, this is the precise place in which many of your favourite character’s names were inspired and brought back to life through the novels.

Surely, it cannot be a coincidence the name of one of the literature's most iconic villains originates from a graveyard, the Thomas Riddle himself! There is a clear parallel throughout, the emphasis on the graveyard, as this is where we are first shown Voldemort to be reborn. Lord Voldemort's return took place in the graveyard of Little Hangleton. This is rumoured to replicate Greyfriars Kirkyard, 10 points to Gryffindor if you are brave enough to find ‘he who must not be named’.

Nevertheless, The Haunted Underground Vaults and Graveyard tour is a perfect option that will give you the opportunity to hear some historical tales in Edinburgh’s most famous graveyard and be guided personally throughout the graveyard. There is even an option to add whisky onto your tour (this will be a recurring theme you may learn).

Victoria Street

“A cobble-stoned shopping area for the wizarding world where Hogwarts students can purchase necessary supplies”.

This description of Diagon Alley hugely mirrors the beautiful Victoria Street, which is why it is now known as Edinburgh’s own Harry Potter Street, which can be visited by all, for all. Muggles, Wizards and Witches are encouraged to enjoy. It is 2024; we do not discriminate based on magic abilities or lack thereof. The vibrant coloured buildings create an alluding contrast from the standard sandstone buildings. Truly magical, no pun intended. There are many otherworldly shops to visit on Victoria Street. Frequent ‘The Museum Context: Retailer of Harry Potter merchandise’, ‘John Kay’s shop’, ‘The Great Wizard’ and many more. From a chocolate frog to your very own Marauder’s map, anything is possible on Victoria Street.

Do you solemnly swear you are up to no good?

The Hogwarts Express Tour

What if I told you it was possible to experience a day of magical adventures and sensational landscapes and feel like a wee wizard on the way to Hogwarts?

All aboard The Hogwarts Express!

The Jacobite steam Train travels between Fort William and Mallaig and crosses the one and only Glenfinnan Viaduct. I shall link some reputable tour providers below to share more insights into this incredible opportunity.

The Cauldron

Afternoon tea with a twist, all beverages and snacks inspired by the classic favourites from The Harry Potter novels. If you are interested in a truly bewitching afternoon, this is the perfect fit. The bucket list item you didn’t know you had: Wizard afternoon tea. Tick.

Or

Does Potion Make sound more up your (Diagon) alley? Science meets magic; become your very own mixologist at the Cauldron. They offer both alcohol and non-alcohol options, so they are inclusive for all!

The Department Of Magic

Wizarding Escape Rooms? Yes, please! The Department of Magic offers many activities, such as Wizarding Escape Rooms, Magic Potions Taven, and enchanting afternoon tea. Where magic meets mystery! I don’t know about you, but I can hear a butterbeer calling my name!

To conclude, Edinburgh is truly a magical city. Whilst exploring all things Harry Potter, I hope you are exposed to the real character of Edinburgh, which inspired JK Rowling to write such scenic novels, the gem of Scotland itself.
